Before doing Arathi to the deity, The devotee is expected to wash his hands.
After litting the wick, a drop of water is put on the plate as a mark of cleansing it.
In olden days when light is dim in the temple, this Arthi illuminates the Sanctorum, there by enabling the devotees see their Lordships.
Above all, this a way of offering respect to the Deity in the presence of Gog Agni. It is God Agni who has the ability to take food and other offerings given by humans from the material world to the Spiritual world.
